Salaam.
Mercy is one of those things you recognise long before you could ever measure it.
جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الرَّحْمَةَ مِائَةَ جُزْءٍ فَأَمْسَكَ عِنْدَهُ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ وَأَنْزَلَ فِي الأَرْضِ جُزْءًا وَاحِدًا فَمِنْ ذَلِكَ الْجُزْءِ تَتَرَاحَمُ الْخَلاَئِقُ حَتَّى تَرْفَعَ الدَّابَّةُ حَافِرَهَا عَنْ وَلَدِهَا خَشْيَةَ أَنْ تُصِيبَهُ
Jaʿala Allāhu ar-raḥmata miʾata juzʾin, fa-amsaka ʿindahu tisʿatan wa tisʿīna, wa anzala fī al-arḍi juzʾan wāḥidan, fa-min dhālika al-juzʾi tatarāḥamu al-khalāʾiqu ḥattā tarfaʿa ad-dābbatu ḥāfirahā ʿan waladihā khashyata an tuṣībahu.
Allah created mercy in one hundred parts and He retained with Him ninety-nine parts, and He has sent down upon the earth one part, and it is because of this one part that there is mutual love among the creation so much so that the animal lifts up its hoof from its young one, fearing that it might harm it.
Sahih Muslim 2752a — Sahih (Book 50, Hadith 20)
Every act of compassion you have ever received came from that one part. Every time someone chose patience instead of anger, every unexpected kindness, every moment your heart softened toward another person — it all came from the same mercy Allah sent into this world.
And it isn't only people who live beneath it. Every creature that has ever guarded something small and defenceless is drawing on that same single part.
The other ninety-nine are still with Allah.
Everything you have ever known of mercy has been a glimpse.
Allah, if this world has been touched by only one part of Your mercy, let us keep reaching for what remains with You
